The Ministry of Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for the project Purchase of flats from the Velenje Coal Mine. The Just Transition Fund has ring fenced a total of 5 million euros to support the project. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the project, the Housing Fund of the Republic of Slovenia will buy flats owned by the Velenje Coal Mine. For the most part, former or current employees of the Velenje Coal Mine, who are mostly over 50 years old, now live in these flats. In fact, the Velenje Coal Mine owns over 300 flats that make up an important share of affordable flats for rent in the region. The deal will ensure the housing security of tenants, avoiding the uncertainty that could arise from the gradual closure of the mine and discontinuation of rental activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aim of the project is to preserve and strengthen public rental housing stock while providing affordable, safe and quality living conditions for current and future tenants, especially socially vulnerable groups, young people and young families. The project is an important just transition measure contributing to social security and development prospects of the Savinjsko-\u0160ale\u0161ka region as it undergoes the restructuring process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project will be implemented under Slovenia’s EU Cohesion Policy Programme 2021-2027 and will receive co-financing from the Just Transition Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The total value of the project is 5,973,159.46 euros, of which the Just Transition Fund will contribute 4,993,945.50 euros.
