The textbook is the primary teaching material for achieving educational goals and knowledge standards in schools. The Rules on the Approval of Textbooks govern the method and procedure for approving textbooks. In Slovenia, there is a demonstrated need to develop quality indicators for textbooks for practical use in the textbook approval and evaluation process, which was also the central focus of the project Quality of Slovenian Textbooks, implemented between 2017 and 2022 as part of the project Development and Implementation of Innovative Learning Environments and Flexible Forms of Learning to Enhance General Competencies. The main objective of the project was to develop textbook-quality indicators for practical use in the approval and evaluation process.
Based on the national and foreign literature, we have designed textbook-quality indicators, which help us assess the quality of selection of adequate textbooks for pupils and students with general and specific learning disabilities, as well as other pupils and students. The indicators are divided into five thematic sets, namely general and overall structure, text form, text structure, language and style, and image and graphic material.
We have developed the first application for assessing the difficulty of texts in the Slovenian language. In the application, users can assess the difficulty of a selected or written text at various levels – words and sentences – and calculate readability scores and word statistics. Using eye-tracking research, we analysed students’ work with selected textbook materials to demonstrate the diversity of ways in which the selected textbook materials are processed and to link these findings to principles for the development of effective multimedia learning materials.
