EU funding for improved pedestrian and cyclist safety in Koper

Ljubljana, 22 May 2025 – The Ministry of Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for the project ITI Urban Municipality of Koper Istrski odred street. The project has received €163,398.84 from the European Regional Development Fund.

Urban Municipality of Koper has provided a new cycling and pedestrian path on a short section of the Istrski odred street and connected it to the existing cycling network. The new addition makes the cycling connection between the areas and points that are important generators of bicycle traffic more effective, easy to use, and attractive. As part of the project, a two-way shared-use path on one side of the road along the Olm potok brook on the nearly 400-metre section between the Hofer store and the road leading to Markovec has been constructed. Street lighting has been installed along both infrastructure elements to improve the safety and visibility of all users during nighttime.

The project aims to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety, reduce negative environmental impacts of motorised traffic, thus contributing to overall environmental sustainability, and promote forms of sustainable travel, especially cycling, as an alternative mode of transport. Additionally, it influences community health by encouraging physical activity, which is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and contributes to the overall well-being of the residents.

The project is carried out in the scope of Slovenia’s EU Cohesion Policy Programme 2021-2027, under priority Sustainable urban mobility. It pursues specific objective Promoting sustainable multimodal urban mobility, as part of transition to a net zero carbon economy.

The €410,693.11 project has received €163,398.84 from the European Regional Development Fund.
