EU funding for new premises for police dog handler unit

Ljubljana, 14 March 2025 – The Ministry of the Interior, the managing authority for EU home affairs funds, has approved the project Novo mesto police dog handler unit.

The Logistics Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior is implementing the project Novo mesto police dog handler unit that is funded through the Internal Security Fund.

Police dogs are invaluable asset in law enforcement and an indispensable part of modern policing. Police dogs assist police units in delivering the most complex tasks and improving public safety. They help police officers keep peace during public order disturbances, search for missing persons, detect drugs and explosives and patrol borders. Adequate workplace both for police dogs and their handlers is therefore essential in ensuring the effectiveness and efficiency of their work.

The project scope will include tearing down the current outdated structure and replacing it with a brand-new energy-efficient and earthquake-proof structure. The new building will feature a locker room with toilet facilities, showers and changing rooms, an office with a communal area, a kitchenette, a drying room for storing and drying the clothing and equipment of police dog handlers as well as a room for the storage of canned dog foods.

The revamped environment will positively impact everyday work of police officers working as police dog handlers and of their four-legged partners, thus improving the efficiency of police operations and officer safety.

The €150,000 project will receive €112,500 from the Internal Security Fund.
