EU funding for the development of prisoners’ competences

Ljubljana, 3 December 2024 – The Ministry of Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for the project Development of prisoners’ competences.

The project will be partly financed by the European Union. As part of it, the Prison Administration of the Republic of Slovenia will set up an upgraded scheme of occupational therapies. It will provide a wider range of vocational training programmes (national vocational qualifications) and deliver targeted therapeutic interventions. Thus, it will be able to offer more programmes at more prison locations and for more groups of users. The aim of the project is to teach prisoners practical skills and enable their adaptation to work environment and working conditions in a gradual, tailor-made way. The programmes and interventions will promote the development of prisoners’ work skills, abilities, and competences. They will facilitate the resocialisation process and prisoners’ reintegration into work in line with the relevant legislation and internal acts governing the employment of prisoners during imprisonment.

The project will be carried out in the framework of Slovenia’s EU Cohesion Policy Programme 2021-2027, under the priority Long-term care and health, and social inclusion. It will pursue the specific objective Promoting social integration of people at risk of poverty or social exclusion, including the most deprived persons and children.

The project is worth a total of EUR 4,478,765 euros and will receive over EUR 3 million, more specifically EUR 3,199,696.90 euros, from the European Social Fund Plus.
