Invitation to Open Fish Farm Day on the occasion of World Fisheries Day 2024

On the occasion of World Fisheries Day, which is celebrated every year on 21 November, we invite you to join us for a special event – an open day at three fish farms across Slovenia between 12 pm and 2 pm.

On the guided tours you will learn about the different fish species and farming technologies of the three fish farms that will open their doors:

• Soča Fish Farm (Kobarid, Fisheries Research Institute of Slovenia): The history of the fish farm dates back to 1939, and today it breeds species such as Sochi trout, Adriatic grayling, and coastal brown trout. Around 20 tonnes of fish are reared annually, mainly for fattening. They are located in Kobarid at Mučeniška 28 and can be reached at 041 390 924.
• Obrh fish farm (Loška dolina valley, Fisheries Research Institute of Slovenia): Built in 1935, this fish farm is today the largest breeding facility for native salmonid fish species in Slovenia. You can see trout, grayling, spearfish and golden trout. They are located in the Loška dolina valley at Vrhnika pri Lož 6 and can be reached at 051 422 120.
• Pšata fish farm (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Vodomec d.o.o.): The Pšata fish farm was the first in Slovenia to obtain EU disease-free status. Here you will see the entire reproductive process of trout and learn about the latest breeding technologies. are located at Pšata 31, Cerklje na Gorenjskem and can be reached at 041 615 110.

Aquaculture and sustainable aquaculture practices are key to reducing pressure on natural fish populations, especially in light of challenges such as climate change.

World Fisheries Day is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of this sector for global food security, ecosystem conservation and the economic development of coastal and rural communities. It is also an opportunity to raise awareness about how the responsible use of natural resources and support for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture have a positive impact on our environment.
