On Wednesday, 18 June 2025, the students of Gimnazija Velenje, winner of the At the School of Open Cohesion project, visited a unique tourist attraction – the former lead and zinc mine in Mežica, where they were accompanied by guides on a guided tour of the mine by bicycle. The visit was part of the prize for their victory and recognition of their innovation, knowledge and understanding of the importance of European Cohesion Policy.
The young people from Velenje were very interested in exploring the underground world of the former mine, where they experienced the mining past of the Koroška region in a very special way – on two wheels – through kilometres of tunnels. They also had the opportunity to learn how EU funding can be used to preserve industrial heritage while promoting sustainable tourism.
At the School of Open Cohesion is a project aimed at raising young people’s awareness of European Cohesion Policy and its impact on people’s lives and the development of local communities. By winning the award, Gimnazija Velenje has confirmed its commitment to quality education and the promotion of active citizenship.
The visit to the former mine in Mežiceawas not only a prize, but also a valuable learning experience that the students will remember for the rest of their lives.
