Open Day at the Krško Beekeeping Centre as part of the Beekeeping Mosaic project

The Krško Beekeeping Centre hosted an Open Day event as part of the Beekeeping Mosaic project, which attracted many visitors. The event was attended by various participants and organisations, focusing on education and raising awareness about the importance of beekeeping.

The workshops gave the youngest children a chance to try their hand at painting a beehive panel, making candles and observing the world of bees through a microscope. Children from the Pravljica and Ciciban kindergartens and members of the beekeeping club of the Jurij Dalmatin Primary School, under the guidance of Suzana Pacek, took part and enthusiastically presented the bee colony and provided interesting activities.

The event was also attended by distinguished guests, including Boštjan Noč, President of the Slovenian Beekeepers’ Association, and Janez Kerin, Mayor of the Municipality of Krško. The event was moderated by Anton Urek, Centre Manager and one of the project partners.

Krško Beekeeping Centre – more than just beekeeping

The Krško Beekeeping Centre is a multipurpose area for education, support for beekeepers and the promotion of beekeeping. The Beekeeping Mosaic project has made it possible to set up the centre, which now includes three main sets of activities:

  1. Support for beekeepers: various training courses and workshops on beekeeping technology, bee health and beekeeping economics. We provide beekeepers with access to analyses of bee products and facilitate networking among beekeepers in the Posavje region.
  2. Youth education: we have developed programmes that introduce young people to the tradition of beekeeping and the importance of bees in nature through games and practical demonstrations.
  3. Beekeeping tourism: by promoting apitherapy and providing insights into beehives, we attract organised groups of different ages, both from Slovenia and abroad.

Beekeeping Mosaic project

The Beekeeping Mosaic project was successfully submitted to the LAG Posavje call for proposals and was implemented from 2020 to 2022. The total value of the project was 351,654 euros, with 145,073 euros of co-financing coming from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the budget of the Republic of Slovenia.

The aim of the project was to create a regional centre for beekeeping, which will serve as a central business, education and promotion hub. The project set up urban apiaries, honey mead beds, and beekeeping trails and held several educational workshops and training sessions. The project has created a rich beekeeping offer, including apitherapy, honey stories and experiences, and a guide to the beekeeping offer. The various activities and products related to beekeeping have contributed to sustainable development and increased the added value of local beekeeping products.
