EU funding for habitat restoration along the Mura and Drava Rivers

Ljubljana, 14 October 2025 – The Ministry of Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for the project Restoration of river and riparian habitats along the Mura and Drava Rivers.

As part of this EU-funded project, the Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation will design measures aimed at improving the conservation status of river and riparian habitats in Natura 2000 Mura River area and Natura 2000 Drava River area. The project will address key environmental and conservation challenges facing these areas because of changed hydromorphological conditions, abandonment of traditional river uses, proliferation of invasive species, and habitat discontinuity. It will thus contribute to sustainable resource management, improvement in the conservation status of qualifying species and habitat types, connectivity conservation, and long-term resilience of ecosystems in the basins of the Drava and Mura Rivers. EU funding will thus help protect nature and support conservation of the habitats along the Drava and Mura Rivers for next generations.

The project Restoration of river and riparian habitats along the Mura and Drava Rivers will be implemented as part of Slovenia’s EU Cohesion Policy Programme 2021-2027 under priority Green transformation for climate neutrality. It will pursue specific objective Enhancing protection and preservation of nature, biodiversity and green infrastructure, including in urban areas, and reducing all forms of pollution.

The €12,176,488.39 project will receive €10,350,015.13 from the European Regional Development Fund.
