EU funding for urban green and public spaces

Ljubljana, 3 July 2026 – The Ministry of Local Self-Government, Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for three urban regeneration projects worth a total of €9.74 million. The projects will receive €5.43 million from the European Regional Development Fund.

Renovation of the Volkmerjeva cesta in Ptuj

In Ptuj, a 720-meter stretch of the Volkmerjeva cesta street will undergo renovation to become a safer, more attractive and people-friendly public space. The project includes the reconstruction of the roadway and sidewalks, the development of dedicated infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, the upgrading of bus stops, the provision of short-stay parking spaces, the creation of a small public square with urban furniture, and the modernisation of municipal infrastructure.

Special emphasis will be on traffic calming measures and the preservation of the existing tree-lined avenue.

The project will enhance accessibility and road safety while improving the quality and attractiveness of the public space for both residents and visitors.

The €4,074,885.64 project will receive €2,770,922.24 from the European Regional Development Fund. The beneficiary of the funding is the Urban Municipality of Ptuj.

Renovation of the city park in Murska Sobota

The aim of the renovation will be to revitalise the city park in Murska Sobota while preserving its key spatial and historical features. The project includes the construction of new pathways, a children’s playground, an outdoor classroom, and an event area with an amphitheatre, as well as the restoration of lawns and the planting of new trees and shrubs.

Particular emphasis will be placed on enhancing biodiversity and the use of sustainable and recycled materials throughout the park.

The renovated park will provide residents with a higher-quality environment for social interaction, recreation, and leisure activities. The 9.28 hectares of renovated urban green space will contribute to a greener, more attractive, and resilient urban environment.

The €1,662,956 project will receive €1,289,893.92 from the European Regional Development Fund. The beneficiary of the funding is the Urban Municipality of Murska Sobota.

Urban Park Loka in Novo mesto

This investment will revitalise the Krka riverside area called Loka, transforming it into a modern and accessible public space dedicated to sport, recreation, and leisure. The project encompasses the development of sports facilities, a children’s playground, sanitary facilities, and spectator stands, as well as measures to improve accessibility throughout the area.

Particular emphasis will be placed on enhancing the riverfront through the creation of new nature-based, sustainable access points to the river and the installation of a floating pontoon.

The renovated area will provide residents and visitors with a high-quality setting for sport, recreation, and social interaction. The 1.2 hectares of renovated green space will contribute to a more attractive, accessible, and sustainable urban environment.

The €4,003,656.79 project will receive €1,369,002.84 from the European Regional Development Fund. The beneficiary of the funding is the Urban Municipality of Novo mesto.
