The Ministry of Local Self-Government, Cohesion and Regional Policy has approved EU funding for street redevelopment projects in Maribor and Koper. The projects will be implemented under the Integrated Territorial Investments mechanism which supports integrated urban development. They will help improve road safety, promote sustainable mobility and contribute to the redevelopment of public space. The projects will receive €4.56 million from the European Regional Development Fund.
Redevelopment of the Gregorčičeva ulica street and the General Maister square
As part of the project, five street sections with a combined length of approximately 867 metres located on the edge of Maribor historic centre will be redesigned to promote sustainable mobility and improve the quality and usability of public space. The redevelopment will cover part of the Gregorčičeva ulica street, General Maister square, part of the Ulica heroja Staneta street in front of the Maribor Town Hall, part of the Tyrševa ulica street and the adjacent junctions.
The General Maister square and part of the Tyrševa ulica street will be transformed into a new shared space, with paved areas designed to accommodate different road users. A network of pedestrian paths will also be created in the park, while parking spaces for motorised vehicles will be removed, except for designated spaces. In addition, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure along the Gregorčičeva ulica street and the Ulica heroja Staneta street will be expanded and improved, with some parking spaces removed to make room for these improvements.
The €7,727,077.08 project will be implemented under Slovenia’s EU Cohesion Policy Programme and will receive €4,239,401.37 from the European Regional Development Fund. The beneficiary of the funding is the Urban Municipality of Maribor.
Regional road between Škocjan and Bertoki
As part of the project, a 1,180-metre-long sidewalk will be constructed along one side of the regional road between Bertoki and Koper, on the section between Arjol and Škocjan. The 3.50- to 3.70-metre-wide facility will serve as a shared space for pedestrians and cyclists.
The investment will improve conditions for walking and cycling, while reducing the negative environmental impacts of motorised traffic. It will promote sustainable mobility by encouraging cycling for everyday journeys as an environmentally friendly alternative to car travel.
The €850,754.44 project will be implemented under Slovenia’s EU Cohesion Policy Programme and will receive €322,905.17 from the European Regional Development Fund. The beneficiary of the funding is the Urban Municipality of Koper.
