EU funding for municipalities: co-financing for municipal integrated transport strategies approved

Ljubljana, 15 November 2023 – The Ministry of Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for the call for proposals for co-financing municipal integrated transport strategies.

The call for proposals awards EU Cohesion Policy funding to municipalities to co-finance the costs of drafting their municipal integrated transport strategies, implemented as a non-infrastructural measure at horizontal level under Slovenia’s EU Cohesion Policy Programme 2021-2027, under the priority ‘sustainable cross-regional mobility and connectivity’, specific objective ‘developing and enhancing sustainable, climate-resilient, intelligent and intermodal national, regional and local mobility, including improved access to the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and cross-border mobility’.

The aim of municipal integrated transport strategies is to change travel habits in municipalities and improve conditions for walking, cycling, public transport and alternative forms of mobility to reduce private motorised transport. A large segment of people’s journeys does not only take within municipal borders but also start or end beyond an individual municipality. Municipalities should thus cooperate with neighbouring municipalities and coordinate individual strategies on matters of common interest (such as public transport, using public bicycles, car sharing, implementation of infrastructure measures, financing of measures, etc.).

The call for proposals, co-financed by EU funds, will thus introduce and promote integrated transport planning and guide local authorities in the development of sustainable transport through instruments such as the municipal integrated transport strategy, which will provide the basis for the long-term and systematic implementation of measures to promote sustainable forms of mobility at the local level.

The call for proposals will be published by the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Energy in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia on Friday, 17 November 2023.

The total funding available under the call for proposals is EUR 5,144,300.00. Cohesion Fund contribution stands at EUR 4,372,655.00.
