Ljubljana, 2 October 2025 – The Ministry of Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for the call for proposals aimed at co-financing R&D and pilot and demonstration projects in the Zasavska and Savinjsko-Šaleška coal regions through the Just Transition Fund.
As part of the call for proposals, co-financing will be made available for the implementation of R&D and pilot and demonstration projects of consortia of companies based in the Zasavska and Savinjsko-Šaleška coal regions. Consortia’s work must focus on a new or improved product, process, or service, developed to the point where it is approved in its final form and suitable for use in a real-world environment or tested in the real world.
”We wish to support at least 23 consortia of companies in both coal regions that will carry out R&D and pilot and demonstration projects for the development of new or improved higher added value products, processes, or services with market potential, which will help boost competitiveness. Grants under the Just Transition Fund will be used for the economic restructuring of the Zasavska and Savinjsko-Šaleška coal regions to facilitate their transition to a low-carbon, circular and digital economy,” said Minister for Cohesion and Regional Development Dr Aleksander Jevšek.
The call for proposals for co-financing R&D and demonstration-pilot projects in the Zasavska and Savinjsko-Šaleška coal regions under the Just Transition Fund will be implemented as part of Slovenia’s EU Cohesion Policy Programme 2021-2027 under priority Restructuring of coal regions. It will pursue specific objective Just Transition Fund.
The call will make a total of €14.420.000 available, the Zasavska coal region will receive €4.420.000 and €10 million will be allocated to the Savinjsko-Šaleška region. The funding will come from the Just Transition Fund.
The call will make a significant contribution to the objectives of Slovenia’s EU Cohesion Policy Programme 2021-2027 and will be published by the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia on 3 October 2025.
