New European Bauhaus

Logo of the New European Bauhaus

The New European Bauhaus (NEB) is an initiative of the European Commission that brings together sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion to create more beautiful and sustainable living spaces and lifestyles. It connects the European Green Deal with our everyday experiences and expresses the EU’s ambition to create environments, products and lifestyles that are beautiful, sustainable and inclusive. The NEB initiative promotes a new lifestyle where sustainability meets style, accelerating the green transition in different sectors of the economy and society. The aim is to ensure that all citizens have access to goods that are circular, low-carbon and that support nature’s restoration and protect biodiversity.

The core values of the new European Bauhaus are:

  • sustainability: from climate goals to circularity, zero pollution and biodiversity,
  • aesthetics: quality of experience and style beyond functionality,
  • inclusion: from valuing diversity to securing accessibility and affordability.

The New European Bauhaus brings citizens, experts, businesses, and institutions together to reimagine sustainable living in Europe and beyond. In addition to creating a platform for experimentation and connection, the initiative supports positive change also by providing access to EU funding for beautiful, sustainable, and inclusive projects.

The new European Bauhaus is a transformative project that brings together sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion to create better living spaces and lifestyles for all EU citizens.

Examples of how NEB is put into practice

Redevelopment of the Transalpina – Europe Square

The investment covered redeveloping the Transalpina – Europe Square and part of the streets of Max Fabiani’s Trident at the Italian side of the border. The entire restored square is a true symbol of the European spirit – an area divided for decades by borders and physical barriers has once again become a common area that connects people. The investments have made the square more welcoming and attractive while preserving some of its historical elements. The square is one of the central spaces of the European Capital of Culture 2025 (GO!2025). As part of the project, 4,239 m2 of vacant and underused space was renovated. The total value of the project amounted to 3.3 million euros, with the European Regional Development Fund contribution standing at 765,232.21 euros.

Libertas cultural hub

The investment covers the renovation of the building and the functional transformation of the former salt warehouse at the Izolska vrata Gate – Libertas in Koper. The building, which is part of the historical environment and is located right next to the city centre, is in need of a thorough renovation, transformation of the functionality of the premises and energy renovation. The establishment of a cultural hub will give a new purpose to the early industrial architecture of the mid-19th century. Libertas will become one of the most visible urban creative cultural platforms in the region. The reconstruction of the building and the landscaping of the surrounding area will improve the urban environment and further revitalise the wider city centre, with the following investment objectives: the elimination of degradation and revitalisation of the urban space, the reconstruction of a cultural monument of local importance next to the old town centre, the restoration and revitalisation of a cultural heritage building. The social aspect of the use of the space will be improved. After the implementation of the project, the area will become a dynamic, programme-rich, socially vibrant, safer and more pleasant space, with new facilities and cultural content, also attractive for multiple visitors, both residents and visitors to Koper. The project will revitalise 2,788.9 m² of renovated and previously underused space. The total cost of the renovation project is 6.2 million euros, of which 1.7 million will come from the European Regional Development Fund.
